As we marvel at the latest AI breakthroughs, from personalized chatbots to cutting-edge weather forecasting, it’s easy to overlook the less glamorous side of this technological revolution: the environmental toll of its infrastructure. The humble graphics processing unit (GPU) has become a crucial component of modern computing, powering everything from gaming consoles to data centers.

GPUs have been at the root of some of the biggest ethical questions new technologies pose since their inception. From graphics hardware used in arcade games in the 1970s to today’s massive data centers, our relationship with these chips has always been complex. Striblet notes that people are willing to make tradeoffs – cheaper clothes, convenience – even if it means contributing to environmental degradation.

Meanwhile, big tech companies are courting more affluent consumers while quietly setting up shop in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. The NAACP has already taken on one company, xAI (now doing business as SpaceXAI), over air pollution from gas generators powering its massive data centers.

As we continue down this path, we’re ignoring the warning signs. Shaolei Ren, a researcher who has studied the costs communities pay for technological progress, cautions that we’re repeating past mistakes. He points out that many of these new data centers are landing in areas where environmental injustice has long been a problem.
