At first glance, “fire cloud” sounds like something out of a disaster movie, but it’s all too real. Intense heat from wildfires generates an updraft of superheated air that can trigger powerful storms. This phenomenon is known as pyrocumulonimbus, or “pyroCb.” Researchers have documented its effects in various parts of the world.

Climate change will only make fire clouds more common in Europe. Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns will create conditions for these rare events to become more frequent – and deadly. The consequences are severe: not only do fire clouds spread fires faster, but they also create a feedback loop that continually strengthens both the fire and the cloud above it.

Wildfire smoke can make some clouds denser, making it harder for them to drop rain that could help dampen fires. When water droplets fall into hot air, “it’s gonna evaporate before it reaches the ground,” says Jean-Baptiste Filippi, a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). This means that instead of quenching flames, the rain will only serve to fuel them further.

The impact of fire clouds is not limited to local areas. The ash lifted into the stratosphere can later fall onto nearby regions, necessitating precautionary evacuation measures. This was seen during Australia’s 2019-20 bushfires and California’s 2020 wildfire season.
